I worked with Amazon through an intermediary marketing group and did quite a few books for them, mostly thrillers. The art department director spent an inordinate amount of time nitpicking comps, often asking for numerous iterations of a single duotone color or other permutations meant to inspire the effect of insanity. The kind of things the art director character in a darkly satirical novel about advertising would do. I can recall at the time it was very stressful to work with them, very demanding and not a whole lot of fun at all. I only remembered I worked on this cover when I saw it in some archives I was going through.
