This author came to me with the idea of a collage for her memoir. She had a wealth of meaningful visual imagery to relate to the contents, but so much that to have tried and include it all would have been a mess. The first thing was to edit down, find art that went along with the ideas, and there wasn’t any, then substitute another idea. It’s a long process. Ultimately a collage solution is abstract, because it's visually out of context without the narrative to guide it. The collage on it’s own must have visual merit, and be compelling enough to inspire the curiosity to read, and at that point, it becomes a kind of visual game.
